PLOTS OF LOVE
In the back parking lot on campus, through the breezeway
Year round, meet at the garden in the south parking lot (from Las Cruces walk past the sanctuary and through the breezeway) at 10 am on Tuesday mornings for weeding, soil prep, planting or harvesting and packaging for delivery to local food pantries. Bring work gloves, drinking water, and tools if you have them.
Food access has been one of Grace Presbyterians missions for over 30 years. In 2010 the congregation created Plots of Love, converting an unused and unlovely patch of dirt on the church campus into 8 gardening plots. Every year hundreds of pounds of a wide range of fresh produce are harvested and donated to the food closets at Carmichael Presbyterian Church and Sierra Arden United Church of Christ.
Drop by or contact Linda Sweetman for more details.
CARMICHAEL FOOD CLOSET
The Carmichael Food Closet, 5645 Marconi Ave, Carmichael, is open Monday-Friday (except holidays). They need volunteers for morning and afternoon shifts as well as staffing the phones. Grace fields a volunteer team on the 2nd Friday of each month, 2–3:30. Some of us work other days according to our schedules and make ourselves available to substitute as needed.
The CFC consists of twelve local churches teaming up to help to feed the needy in our neighborhood; Carmichael Presbyterian, Grace Presbyterian, American River Community, Arcade Baptist, Celtic Cross Presbyterian, Christ Community, Cypress Avenue Baptist, Gethsemane Lutheran, Northminster Presbyterian, St. Marks Methodist, Town & Country Lutheran & Unitarian Universal Society of Sacramento.
Family Promise works with displaced families to both secure permanent housing and to develop the self-sufficiency needed make homelessness less likely to occur. Aproximately18 Sacramento area faith communities take turns providing temporary housing a week at a time. Grace volunteers help at Carmichael Presbyterian Church making up beds and getting rooms ready about 4 times per year. There are also opportunities welcome the guests, help prepare meals, spend quality time with them and their children, and provide some recreational activities.
